    From the Karwinskii Family. Now there have been found up to 12 different types of this species. Cirial is characterized by being very tall, around 2m.

    Its name comes from the “cirios” which are tall candles used in Mexican churches.

    It is commonly found in the wild, and although people cultivate it to use it as fences, it takes 8 to 9 years to mature.

    Its common name Tepeztate, comes from the Nahuatl word Tepetl, which means hill because it grows on the cliffs.

    It takes between 18 to 20 years to mature.

    Fortunately, Agave marmorata is already being cultivated, although more efforts are needed to avoid regional extinctions in the future.

    Agave Tobala

    Its scientific name is Agave Potatorum and among other common names it has is Papalometl, which comes from the Nahuatl word, butterfly.

    This name is given by the shape of its leaves which look like butterfly wings.

    In Oaxaca, currently, almost all the mezcal communities make mezcal from Agave Potatorum.

    It’s currently a cultivated maguey and in some communities, it is still collected from the wild.

    Its scientific name is Agave Americana, a very large agave.

    ΤIts leaves (pencas) have a whitish green color, due to the wax that covers them.

    . It can take up to 18 to 25 years to grow, so it is found in the wild. However, we are making efforts to preserve this type of agave by cultivating it, to be able to produce an exquisite mezcal.
